RE: What's IBM/Lotus' plan to win the email war? ~Justin Minluternivu 2.Oct.02 08:19 PM a Web browser Notes Client 6.0All Platforms
I'm not sure you are reading that correctly. The point, as I see it, is that the Notes client is not an e-mail client. Even though messaging is part of the core functionality of Notes, it's really nothing more than another database in the grand scheme of things. Keeping the client relatively generic (rather than separating the e-mail and database clients) is, overall, a better solution for collaboration. That may keep Notes from being a great stand-alone mail client, but you don't have to get to the Fortune 500 before the benefits of Notes outweigh the disadvantages (client footprint, embedded CAL cost, etc.) In fact, I see the small shop (too big for everyone to ride in the same car on the way to work, too small to have "interchangeable employees") as a better target for the Notes collaboration model than bigger houses would be.
I agree with a couple of the points made above: getting Notes/Domino into the schools would do a lot for the image and growth of the platform. Imagine where the platform could go if more of the "best and brightest" were aware of it. (No offense to those who already qualify and are involved in ND development, but we have to admit that a lot of people get into this game accidentally.)
